About

Jack opened his first restaurant, the Down Home Diner, in March of 1987, at the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.  He wowed patrons with inexpensive, inventive dishes like cornbread pizza with Tennessee ham and chicken-fried buffalo steak with red-eye gravy.  In November 1989, he opened Jack's Firehouse in the Fairmount area of Philadelphia featuring "haute country" cuisine.Jack's resolutely American regional style is clearly defined by his commitment to using products that are locally grown and raised.  Saving the farm one Southern dish at a time inside a Firehouse built in 1871. Open daily for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Proudly showcasing new Executive Chef Johnathan Vargo's take on comfort food with influences from former Executive Chef Jack McDavid's nationally renowned haute-country cuisine.

Jack's Firehouse has always been committed to using the finest and freshest ingredients. This is why the restaurant has chosen to increase their support of local farmers and purveyors through a partnership with the PA Preferred Program. Just a quick note to relate some feedback on our “Bite&Fright” experience on Saturday night, 10/26. Our reservations were for 7:30 and we arrived on time ... we were promptly seated and our server came out immediately and began to explain some questions we had regarding the available entrees. He was not aware at this point we were there for the F&B. When we explained to him that we had purchased the package, it was quite evident that his entire attitude and demeanor changed. We couldn’t understand why , now, he was extremely “unavailable” and was attending to his other tables while we sat and waited ever longer and longer for our meal. We noticed that the tables around us. Being much larger parties, had been seated after us, and received their food before we did. (And not just by a couple minutes). Eventually our food was brought out. The ribs I ordered were very good, however my wife’s and my sons steak was not acceptable . Although they were given a steak knife (we were only provided a butter knife initially) cutting the steak was more akin to sawing through shoe leather. Both steaks we put aside in their entirety and when our server asked us at the end of our entree if everything was “ok”. I took the tome to explain our concerns. Our server stated “I’m very sorry” and walked away. Not to be seen again. We received our chocolate cake from one of the runners, and finally at 9:30 (2 hrs later) I went and stood by the swing doors to the kitchen so that I could tell our server that we needed our bill. Another 10 minutes and our bill was brought to our table by a young girl (not our server) and she was quick to explain that a 20% gratuity had already been added That ..... in itself explains to me why our server no long felt he needed to “work” for his tip. I cannot believe for one minute that our complaint of the quality of the steaks was NEVER addressed and ..... your restaurant so flippantly added a 20% gratuity (18 is considered a good tip) to a party of “3” when the server did not care one bit about the service he provided to us. We had a HORRIBLE first experience at your restaurant and I hope to hear from someone before I take this to social media.

Fun place and looks like good food (didn't get to try it) and great bar tenders. Good selection of whiskeys and bourbon and enough drafts to keep me happy. Right across from the historic eastern penitentiary great location not to far from lots in Philadelphia so with the little walk to check out this reformed old firehouse.

The hot and alcoholic cider was a hit, lobster mac and cheese was very good, pulled pork sandwich was not good. We stopped to go before doing eastern state penitentiary's terror behind the walls, so the food came out quick, but it definitely could have been better. Going here for drinks and light food is your best bet. If you want a real dining meal, I would suggest somewhere else.

Jack's firehouse "fright and bite experience" gave us a three course meal for $55 per person. This also included a quick pass ticket to eastern state penitentiary! The food was fantastic and we were served quickly. We sat outside and had an awesome eexperience.

Cool environment, good food (had the Lobster Mac and would recommend it). Great atmosphere for a date-night. Little pricey on the menu side of things and not too many sharing options for finger food.
