Mike Campo of Campo’s in Old City Philadelphia sat down with us to share his love of Philadelphia, the Phillies, and serving customers cheesesteaks and hoagies you’d want to tell your friends about.

Campo's is a family run sandwich shop that has been making Philly's best cheesesteaks, hoagies, and specialty sandwiches since 1947.

What is your favorite moment working at Campo’s?
Going to the 2008 Phillies World Series game with my Campo's employee badge. Shhhh!

How did you get involved with Campo’s?
When I was 5ish, my father used to make me clean the windows in the shop with ammonia and newspaper. That is my first memory of working in the shop but I'm sure I was there even earlier.

Experience.

What's one thing most people don’t know about Campo’s?
Most people don't know that we have a 6 foot hoagie! It comes with all the toppings and extras, and makes a beautiful presentation.

We see you started in 1947, do you still use some of the same recipes to this day? Which ones?
Our meatballs are made the same way as they were in 1947. You have to try them to understand why they never changed.

What's your favorite item on the menu? Why?
My favorite sandwich is a pepperoni pizza steak with fried onions. If I am out of town.....thats what I eat for dinner the night I get home! Everytime, like a clock.

We noticed you ship your cheesesteaks, how does one go about doing that and what state is the most popular?
We have been shipping best of Philly packages since the early 90's but today we use Goldbelly. Its very easy, the link is https://www.goldbelly.com/campos-philly-cheesesteaks. We pack it up, flash freeze it, and you will get it in 12 hours with heating instructions. Florida, California, Texas, and New York are the most popular states but our favorites are all of the military bases around the country!

Our name is our business and on all of our food, we take it very seriously.

What types of events do you typically cater?
We have catered so many different kind of things in 75 years. Holiday parties, BarBeQue's, Wine and cheese parties, Birthdays, Family Reunions, and even a few weddings!! We typically cater events for people who want it to feel like a local Philly thing! We have such a variety of sandwiches and homemade foods, there is nowhere we look out of place

Who was the most famous person to eat at your shop?
Oscar De La Hoya came into Campo's and ate WITH Bernard Hopkins!

How did you get your award winning sandwiches into the Wells Fargo Center?
Aramark approached us when they had an opening in the Wells Fargo center, and we have been there for 12 years!
